What The Wife of Seishu Hanaoka Is About
Hanaoka Seishu was a Japanese physician of the early nineteenth century. He worked for years on a drug that would give general anaesthesia, and in 1804 he operated using it. Where the film looks is what that work cost inside the house. The physician’s wife Kae and his mother Otsugi live under the same roof. Both of them choose to volunteer for the trials. After a while that choice turns into a contest of who can give more. What drives the contest is the man’s attention. The film does not blame either of them; it shows the order that shut them into that house. Ayako Wakao and Hideko Takamine appear in Yasuzō Masumura’s Japanese film of 1967.
