The Will

A young man from a poor family falls in love with the daughter of a wealthy one. The difference of class grows not only through the attitude of the two families but through the economic hardship of the period; finding work, setting up a home and having a say in the neighbourhood are the real obstacles in front of this attachment. The two young people do not give way and their bond holds, but for it to hold each of them has to settle accounts with their own surroundings. The film shows neighbourhood life not as a background but as the place where decisions are made. It came to be counted among the most remembered works of early Egyptian cinema. Fatma Roshdy and Hussein Sedki appear in Kamal Selim’s hundred and eight minute Egyptian film, completed in 1939.
