What The Wind Is About
Bah and Batrou are two Malian secondary school students. The two come from very different backgrounds. Bah is descended from a great traditional chief, while Batrou’s father is a military governor and so a figure of the new ruling power. They meet at school and a bond forms between them. Both families are against it. The students take part in a protest against the falsifying of exam results and are jailed. The film is about a generation that refuses the established order, and takes the force of mass protest as its subject. The structure of power in postcolonial Mali is the ground of the account. The work won the grand prize at FESPACO. Souleymane Cissé’s hundred minute Malian film was completed in 1983.
