What The Women's Balcony Is About
In a Mizrahi congregation in the Bukharan Quarter of Jerusalem, the women's balcony of the synagogue collapses during a bar mitzvah. The rabbi's wife is badly hurt, the elderly rabbi never really comes back to himself, and the congregation is left without a building or a leader. A young and charismatic rabbi arrives to help, and persuades the men to rebuild, but the new plan has no women's balcony in it. From there Emil Ben-Shimon follows the women organising. The film keeps its comic register and refuses to caricature anyone; the argument it stages is not between faith and unbelief but inside the same faith. It drew six Ophir nominations in Israel and premiered at Toronto in 2016.
