What The Wonderful Horrible Life of Leni Riefenstahl Is About
Three hours on the life of Leni Riefenstahl: a career that began in dance, continued as an actress in mountain films, and produced Triumph of the Will and Olympia in Nazi Germany. It does not stop there either. The post-war years, the loss of standing, the Nuba photographs, and a woman still scuba diving past ninety are all in it. The project was Riefenstahl's own idea; eighteen directors turned it down before Ray Müller took it. In front of the camera she defends herself, argues over details, and at times comes straight at the director. Müller does not drop his questions. Two things end up on screen at once: the life she describes, and the places where her account does not match the historical record. The film leaves both of them there.
