What The Year of the Hare Is About
Vatanen works in advertising in Helsinki. One day he walks out of all of it: his job, his marriage, the city. On the road he finds a hare hurt by a car and takes it with him. The two of them head north towards Lapland. But however far he goes, the life he left behind will not let him alone. Risto Jarva's Finnish film is adapted from Arto Paasilinna's 1975 novel. It became Jarva's last film; the director died in a road accident a few days after it opened. The telling does not romanticise running away: the wilderness is beautiful, but a person is alone out there too. Antti Litja takes the lead, and the humour is dry and Finnish.
