What The Young Guard Is About
In 1942, in Krasnodon under Nazi occupation, secondary school students set up an underground resistance organisation. They hand out leaflets, carry out sabotage, help prisoners get away, and what they do keeps up the spirits of those still in the town. But the organisation is uncovered and most of the young people are caught and killed. The film was adapted from Alexander Fadeyev’s novel of the same name, and the novel rests on the story of a real youth organisation formed during the war in what is now Ukraine. The hundred and eighty nine minute Soviet production, made in two parts, was completed in 1948, and Sergei Gerasimov’s film was the most watched film in the country that year.
