What The Young in Heart Is About
The Carletons live by fraud: the father passes himself off as a retired colonel, the mother charms everyone in the room, and the two grown children hunt for rich spouses. Thrown off the Riviera as undesirables and put on a train, they fall in with an elderly, wealthy and entirely alone woman, and the plan writes itself: win her over and play for the will. What they do not expect is that the trust she gives them will push all four into honest work for the first time in their lives. Richard Wallace directed and David O. Selznick produced this 1938 comedy, which handles confidence trickery with affection rather than a lecture. Janet Gaynor, Douglas Fairbanks Jr., Roland Young and Billie Burke all play at the same tempo, and nobody is drawn as a villain, only as someone who has never tried the other thing.
