What The Zoo Is About
This detective picture by Satyajit Ray brings Byomkesh Bakshi, the well known sleuth of Bengali fiction, to the screen. When Dr Nishanath Sen, a retired judge, is murdered inside the colony he founded where former convicts and former performers live together, Byomkesh and his assistant Ajit take up the case. Everyone in the colony has a past to hide, and that is exactly the detective's problem: not what any of them is, but what each is trying to become. It is one of the films Ray himself spoke of with little affection while audiences liked it. Uttam Kumar leads. The solution is left unspoiled here.
