This Is My Country

Turing and his wife Luz both work at a printing press. When Luz becomes pregnant, Turing has to ask his boss for a raise. The boss grants it on one condition: the man must sign a paper saying he belongs to no union. Soon afterwards his friends start a union and invite him in; because of the paper he cannot join. His workmates take him for a traitor and shut him out. When he keeps working through a strike his isolation grows deeper still. A worker with no interest in politics coming to see, late, that the same order strikes everyone is where the account arrives. The film was shot in the Philippines under martial law and was smuggled out of the country to be shown at Cannes. Phillip Salvador takes the lead in Lino Brocka’s hundred and eight minute Filipino film, completed in 1984.
