What This is My Mother Is About
Pierre is thirty-three, good at his work as a florist, and his life runs to a pattern. That pattern breaks when Judith, the mother he has not seen in two years, turns up at the door. Judith lives with bipolar disorder and has just walked out of the clinic where she was staying. Pierre's only thought is to take her back, and once they set off it becomes clear this is not as simple as he assumed. Julien Carpentier's film neither romanticises the illness nor reduces it to a burden. Judith is at times unbearable and at times the most alive person in the room. Agnès Jaoui moves between those states, and the film's balance depends on those moves. William Lebghil plays Pierre as a son near the end of his patience. The tone sits between comedy and drama, and the laughs mostly come at moments of embarrassment. Who it's for: Viewers who like French family comedy, films that treat mental health with humour, and mother and son stories. Who it's not for: Anyone sensitive about screen portrayals of bipolar disorder may find some scenes too light, and the resolution arrives too smoothly.
