What This Was a Woman Is About
From the outside Sylvia Russell is a respectable family woman. Inside the house she rules everyone in it. She cannot rest until she gets her way. Her husband is a mild man with no ambition. Over the years Sylvia breaks his confidence. She has bound her son and daughter to her as well. She wants to own them and to direct them. Her daughter Fenella decides to marry. The mother is furious at this sign of independence. She pretends to welcome her son in law. Behind it she works to bring the marriage down. Using a girl who works in the house, she puts him in an impossible position. The couple separate in the end. Sylvia does not stop at that. The film shows how far this woman will go. Sonia Dresdel and Walter Fitzgerald appear in the hundred and two minute film, a British production Tim Whelan finished in 1948.
