What Thithi Is About
Raam Reddy's film is set in a remote village in southern India and follows three generations of men after the death of Century Gowda at a hundred and one. His son does not care about the death at all and carries on wandering; his grandson looks for a way to sell land to cover the cost of the funeral; the grandson's own son is chasing a girl from a nomadic community. The three lines converge at the thithi, the final ceremony held eleven days after a death. The whole cast was drawn from the village itself and none of them are actors. The film neither exalts nor dramatises the death, building a comedy instead out of inheritance, money and daily life. It is among the most internationally recognised works of Kannada cinema.
