What Those Who Remained Is About
Barnabás Tóth's 2019 Hungarian film is adapted from a novel by Zsuzsa Várkonyi and set in Budapest just after the Second World War. Aldó, a gynaecologist in his forties, lost his wife and two sons in the camps; Klára, sixteen, lost her parents and her little sister. Each recognises the other's emptiness and they hold on to one another, and what forms between them stands in for a father and a daughter. But the neighbours see the age gap and read something else into it, and under the tightening pressure of the fifties that reading becomes dangerous. The film does not leave the relationship ambiguous; it is explicit about what it is and what it is not. It was Hungary's submission for the 92nd Academy Awards and made the shortlist.
