Tichá bolest

A young man has spent his whole life with his grandfather. At school he was the only pupil refused a place in the youth brigade, because his father had been sentenced to death for spying. When his turn for compulsory military service comes, they put him in a unit set up for people counted unreliable. The film tells how, in the Czechoslovakia of the fifties, an accusation was inherited by the child. An order in which nobody is punished for anything they themselves did stands at the centre. The relation between grandfather and grandson is what the story rests on. The work was made after the regime had changed. Rudolf Hrušínský and Ivan Jiřík appear in Martin Hollý’s ninety five minute Czechoslovak film, completed in 1991.
