What Tidal Wave Is About
As the people living on Haeundae beach prepare for the summer season, a geologist reports the risk of a tsunami in the sea to the east. Nobody takes him seriously. The film gives its whole first half to the town: a fisherman, a rescue worker, a family. The wave arrives only in the second half, by which time you know everyone, and that is the calculation. JK Youn directed. It drew large audiences in Korea and the effects were done with an American studio. Who it's for: those who like disaster films with a character-led first half. Who it's not for: viewers wanting scientific consistency; the warning time and the behaviour of the wave are set by dramatic need.
