Tunnel

The story of a man trapped in a collapsed tunnel. Jung-soo is an ordinary car salesman. He has bought a cake for his daughter's birthday and is driving home. Passing through a newly opened tunnel, it collapses. He survives inside the car. What he has: a phone with little charge left, two bottles of water and the birthday cake. Outside, a rescue operation begins. That is the real subject: as the work goes on the press turns the event into a show, politicians pose for cameras, pressure grows because the adjacent tunnel project is stalled, and the cost starts being discussed. At a certain point the public begins to argue about whether the rescue should continue. The narrative runs two lines together: survival inside, the exhaustion of patience outside. The register is not that of a disaster film; it looks at the rescue system itself and keeps sliding into black comedy. Ha Jung-woo plays Jung-soo, Oh Dal-su the head of the rescue team and Bae Doona his wife. Kim Seong-hun directed. A strong example for anyone who likes Korean cinema and disaster stories that carry institutional criticism. For a viewer expecting action, the film consists largely of waiting and arguing.
