What Tokyo March Is About
A love tragedy built on the class divide in Taishō Japan, and one of the socially inclined pictures Mizoguchi made at the end of the twenties. Its scenes of Tokyo in that decade are now treated as a document in their own right. The title comes from the song composed by Shinpei Nakayama and sung by Chiyako Sato; the record sold four hundred thousand copies, making it one of Japan’s first popular music successes, and the joint marketing of song and film is counted among the earliest examples of that practice anywhere. Only something under half an hour of the picture survives.
