What Totò le Mokò Is About
When the famous gangster hiding in the Casbah of Algiers dies in a shootout with the police, his gang decides to install a replacement: a relative from Naples, a street musician named Antonio. The man is neither a gangster nor a leader and simply lets the misunderstanding run. The film is a direct parody of Pepe le Moko from 1937, a classic of French cinema in which Jean Gabin's gangster in the Casbah became legendary. Parodies of this kind are common in Toto's work, taking the shape of a famous film and filling it with his own chaos.
