Touch of the Light

Yu-siang is a young man blind from birth and extraordinary at the piano. He enters a music school in Taipei; for the first time he will be living away from his family, on his own. Nobody at the school knows how to behave around him. In the same city a girl called Jie is working; she has a job at a drinks shop but wants to be a dancer and tells nobody. The two of them meet and each gives back what the other had given up. The young man at the centre of the film is played by Huang Yu-Siang, and he is playing his own life; he really is a pianist blind from birth and the film rests on his story. That is also why it is he who plays in the performance scenes. Chang Jung-chi's film does not set disability up as a tragedy; Yu-siang does not want to be pitied, and that is the film's clearest sentence. Sandrine Pinna plays Jie. A hundred and ten minutes.
