What Tourist Train Is About
On the popular train from Rome to Orvieto, a group of people leave the city for a single day. That day is the whole film: introductions, small quarrels, an afternoon on bicycles, a moment of danger at the river. Raffaello Matarazzo shot all of it on real locations without ever entering a studio, and that choice has led the film to be counted as a forerunner of neorealism, made a year before Renoir’s Toni. Although it was produced at the height of fascism it carries no propaganda. There is one more first here: the score is the first Nino Rota ever wrote for cinema.
