What Tower Is About
On 1 August 1966 a man opens fire from the tower of the University of Texas in Austin, and for ninety-six minutes everyone below is caught in the open. The documentary rebuilds those ninety-six minutes minute by minute from the accounts of people who were there: a pregnant student lying wounded on the ground, a girl who runs to her, a boy delivering newspapers, a civilian who takes his rifle and climbs the tower. Keith Maitland made the reconstructions in rotoscope animation and blended them with real archive footage. The film barely names the shooter; its interest is entirely in what was done that day. Counted as the first mass campus attack in America, the event is still cited as a reference. Who it is for: viewers who like formally inventive documentary. Who it is not for: anyone avoiding accounts of shootings.
