What Town Without Pity Is About
Four American soldiers stationed in Germany are accused of raping a young woman from the nearby village. Local anger forces the court martial to be held in public and the prosecution asks for the death penalty. Major Steve Grant, defending them, sees that the only way to save his clients is to take the woman's reputation apart in the courtroom, and that dilemma, together with how the town looks on, is what the film is about. Gottfried Reinhardt made it in 1961 from Manfred Gregor's novel Das Urteil, with the screenplay rewritten uncredited by Dalton Trumbo at Kirk Douglas's request. Dimitri Tiomkin's title song was nominated for the Academy Award for best song.
