Medieval Bohemia, at a moment when it is not yet settled which god people answer to. The Kozlík clan lives by robbing the roads. When Mikoláš fails to talk his neighbour Lazar into a defence pact, he abducts Lazar's daughter Marketa, who was days from entering a convent. What follows is neither romance nor deliverance, only snow, wolves, blood and a constant low roar. Vláčil shot it over roughly two years in conditions that genuinely froze his cast. It contains sexual violence.
