Shadows of a Hot Summer

Ondrej lives with his family on a farm high in the mountains. The place is the Beskids in the years just after the war. The house is far from town and there are no neighbours. One day an armed group arrives at the door. There are five of them, from the Ukrainian Insurgent Army. One of the five is wounded. They want to hide in the house until he recovers. They take the family hostage. Ondrej is given a clear task, he is to go and bring back a doctor. The quiet life the family had led changes in a moment. The tension inside the house builds over days. František Vláčil tells it with few words and a hard landscape. The film won the Crystal Globe at Karlovy Vary in 1978. Juraj Kukura and Marta Vančurová appear in the hundred minute film, a Czechoslovak production Vláčil finished in 1978.
