What Adelheid Is About

The Sudetenland, right after the Second World War. A Czech soldier coming home is installed in a mansion taken from a Nazi family, and the daughter of the house, Adelheid, is assigned to him as a servant. What grows between them is neither quite love nor quite complicity, but it leaves each of them facing their own conscience. Frantisek Vlacil adapted Vladimir Korner’s novel for his first colour feature and touched the expulsion of the Germans, a subject nobody in Czechoslovakia had addressed openly until then. It is now spoken of just behind Marketa Lazarova.
