What Tread Softly Stranger Is About

Unable to pay what he owes the bookmakers in London, Johnny goes back to the northern industrial town he grew up in. There he meets his brother Dave, an accountant at the steel works, and Calico, who is more or less Dave’s girlfriend. It soon becomes clear that Dave has been taking money from the works and spending it on her. To cover the shortfall the brothers plan to rob the wages safe, but the night watchman sees them and the business goes somewhere nobody can come back from. Adapted from a stage play, the film uses the town under the factory chimneys like a noir. Diana Dors and George Baker appear in Gordon Parry’s ninety minute British film, completed in 1958.
