Tom Brown's Schooldays

The years are the eighteen thirties and the place is England. Tom Brown is sent to a boys’ boarding school. The school runs on hard rules. The punishments are severe and flogging is one of them. Tom struggles from the first day. Older boys grind down the new arrivals. The hardest of them is a boy called Flashman. Flashman’s cruelty does not leave Tom alone. There are other things at the school too. Tom makes close friends. The rugby field becomes a place of its own for him. And there is the headmaster, Doctor Thomas Arnold. The man is trying to change the school. Tom’s moral side takes shape between those three things. The film is adapted from a novel of the same name. John Howard Davies and Robert Newton appear in the ninety three minute film, a British production Gordon Parry finished in 1951.
