Trembling Before G-d

The documentary tells the stories of gay Jews living in Orthodox and Hasidic communities. Some have been put out of the house by their families, some are still married and have told no one, some have knocked at their rabbi’s door for years and received the same answer; none of them wants to give up either faith or identity, and they remain in between. The film does not set out to defend them or to accuse the community; it passes on the sentences of those who speak without breaking them and accepts that the question has no easy answer. Sandi Simcha DuBowski’s ninety four minute American documentary was shot over five years in Brooklyn, Jerusalem, Los Angeles, London, Miami and San Francisco. It was completed in 2001, was shown at Sundance and won the Teddy award for best documentary in Berlin.
