Shay Walker B Bruce Hadnot What Bloody Nose, Empty Pockets Is About
Bill and Turner Ross's 2020 film covers the last night of a bar. The regulars arrive, drink, argue, sing and stay until the place closes; the camera never goes outside. For a long stretch it watches like pure documentary, and it is not. The bar is presented as being in Las Vegas; in reality it is in New Orleans. The closing night is a construction. The people on screen are not professional actors but individuals the directors selected, and there is no script, only the barest outline. The drinking is real. The method caused an argument in documentary circles: does real behaviour by real people inside a staged situation count as documentary? The film leaves that question open and concentrates on the bar itself and the people who take shelter there. Who it's for: viewers who like hybrid documentary and portraits built around a place. Who it's not for: anyone who wants verifiable reality from a documentary; the film breaks that expectation deliberately.
