Matthias & Maxime

Two men who have been friends for years in Montreal have to kiss for a student short film. Neither of them talks about it afterwards. The film does not use the moment as a revelation; the narrative is really about how the thing left unsaid changes the whole group of friends. In the crowded scenes everyone talks at once while the two say nothing, and the relationship is carried without dialogue. Xavier Dolan wrote, directed and played one of the two parts. It counts as the calmest and least showy of his films. Who it's for: those who like relationship drama that moves on touch and glance. Who it's not for: viewers wanting a clear resolution; the film stays undecided to the last moment.
