What True North Is About

The crew of a bankrupt Scottish trawler start carrying undocumented migrants across the stormy waters of the North Sea to get out from under their debts. Setting off, the arithmetic looks simple: one crossing, one payment. But the people in the hold and the state of the sea take the job somewhere they cannot carry, and an argument begins between the skipper and the crew about who is responsible for how much. The film gives people smuggling not as a distant news item but as decisions made by a few men shut inside the same boat. Peter Mullan and Martin Compston appear in Steve Hudson’s ninety six minute film, completed in 2007.
