Truth & Treason

Truth & Treason, directed by Matt Whitaker, is a film based on the true story of seventeen year old Helmuth Hübener, who secretly listened to banned Allied radio broadcasts in Nazi Germany and, with his friends, distributed anti-Nazi leaflets. Hübener, along with friends Rudolf Wobbe and Karl-Heinz Schnibbe, produced more than twenty leaflets over six months; he was caught by the Gestapo, sentenced to death, and became one of the youngest German resistance members executed by the Nazis. This group was separate from, and parallel to, the better known White Rose resistance movement. The film was shot over fifty days in Vilnius, Lithuania, and released simultaneously as both a feature film and a four part limited series; it holds an 86 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes. Who it's for: anyone curious about the true story of a lesser known anti-Nazi resistance group, separate from the White Rose, told through the eyes of a teenager executed at seventeen. Who it's not for: those looking for the story of the White Rose (the Sophie Scholl group), since this covers an entirely separate, parallel resistance cell.
