A man is in the electric chair. In the two seconds between the switch and death he lives through how he got there. The film is adapted from Elliott Lester's 1931 play and is almost entirely flashback: the marriage of a high rise riveter and a woman who works in a dance hall, the loss of his job, the rotting of the relationship, and where it ends. Mervyn LeRoy directed. Edward G. Robinson's long monologue at the close is among the most cited scenes of his career. It belongs to the period before Hollywood tightened its own rules, and it is a hard sixty seven minutes.
