U.S. Marshals

Stuart Baird’s sequel drops Richard Kimble altogether. Harrison Ford declined to return, the doctor fell out of the early drafts, and the weight moved onto the pursuer. Baird had spent most of his career in the cutting room, with editing nominations for Superman and Gorillas in the Mist, and this was only his second film as director. Wesley Snipes has said he knew him first as the editor of Demolition Man. The crash was built in two separate places. According to the production notes, visual effects designer Peter Donen laid a concrete track outside Los Angeles and drove a model aircraft into a scaled replica of the Illinois location, recording the impact with 7 cameras at once. The passage with the actors underwater used a full size fuselage rigged in the river, hollow tubes beneath it pumped with air or water so the plane could be lowered and raised on camera. It opened in second place on the weekend of 6 March 1998, still behind Titanic. A good fit if you want the crash and the East Harlem drop from a roof onto a departing train read as physical pieces put together one at a time. Not for anyone who wants the fugitive’s innocence settled early; what Sheridan did is deliberately held back for a long stretch.
