What Uncle Silas Is About
After her father’s death, guardianship of the young heiress Caroline Ruthyn passes to her uncle Silas and she moves into his house. Silas has no money, his health is poor and his name was once mixed up with dissipation; the large fortune his niece has come into is within his reach. A governess called Madame de la Rougierre is installed over the girl in the house, and Caroline slowly comes to see that everyone around her is part of the same plan. Charles Frank’s ninety eight minute British film was adapted from Sheridan Le Fanu’s 1864 novel Uncle Silas with a screenplay by Ben Travers.
