Young people growing up in the crowded San Giovanni quarter of Rome in the last years of the war; the film watches their daily life, their small calculations and the moment they are pushed into being adults. Renato Castellani gave every leading part to non-professionals; the only known name in the cast was Alberto Sordi. It competed at Venice and took the prime minister’s office prize for best Italian film, along with a share of the Silver Ribbons. This is the first part of Castellani’s trilogy of the poor, followed by È primavera in 1950 and Due soldi di speranza in 1952. The strain was later given the name pink neorealism, because it sees the problem but softens its edges.
