What United Is About
Manchester United's young side of the mid-fifties, league champions twice over, were known as the Busby Babes. In February 1958 their plane failed to get off the runway at Munich and eight of them were killed. The film is less about the crash than about what came after: Jimmy Murphy, the assistant manager who was not on the flight, holding the club together with a handful of survivors and whoever he could sign in a hurry. Made for the BBC, it is quiet, unshowy and mostly set away from the pitch.
