1987: When the Day Comes

In January 1987 a university student, Park Jong-chul, dies under police interrogation. The security apparatus wants it closed as a heart attack. A prosecutor demands an autopsy, a journalist starts digging, a prison guard carries a message out, and each of them takes a small risk. The sum of those risks becomes the June Democratic Uprising. That is the structure: there is no single hero. The camera moves from one person to the next, and with every handover the story grows. It shows a system cracking not through one act of courage but through the separate decisions of people who never meet. Jang Joon-hwan directed. It was a major commercial success in South Korea, taking over fifty million dollars against a budget of fifteen billion won. Its flaws: the real figures are sometimes drawn flat, the other side is one dimensional, and the ending pushes hard for tears.
