The Yellow Sea

A taxi driver deep in gambling debt, from the Korean minority region of China, agrees to travel to South Korea to look for his wife. In exchange he is to kill a man. The film deals with the killing early and builds its real narrative after it: he runs while three separate groups hunt him. The chases are deliberately clumsy and exhausting; nobody is a professional, and the weapons are axes, bones and bricks. Na Hong-jin directed, with Ha Jung-woo and Kim Yun-seok in the leads. Before watching: more than one version circulates, and the international cut is around half an hour shorter than the director's. The short version leaves connections broken; watch the longer cut if you can find it. The violence is also bloody and relentless.
