What Unman, Wittering and Zigo Is About

John Ebony starts work at Chantry, a boys’ boarding school, and takes charge of Form 5B. Pelham, the teacher before him, appears to have lost his way in fog and fallen from the nearby cliffs. The class tells him it was no accident, says the boys killed their teacher themselves, and Ebony begins to think he is next. John Mackenzie directed; Simon Raven wrote the screenplay from Giles Cooper’s 1958 BBC radio play. David Hemmings both leads and served as executive producer, and Paramount released it. The Turkish title given in the record translates as School of Sadists, a title that belongs to exploitation marketing rather than to the film, and it misdescribes the quiet menace that is the picture’s real strength.
