What A Sense of Freedom Is About
John Mackenzie’s film for Scottish Television is drawn from the 1977 autobiography of Jimmy Boyle, a Glasgow gangster who came to be described as the most violent man in Scotland. It follows that road and the prison regime waiting at the end of it, the isolation and the beatings, and Peter McDougall’s script neither turns Boyle into a hero nor lets the institution off. Violence runs in both directions here, and the system hardens at least as fast as the prisoner does. David Hayman takes the lead, Frankie Miller and Rory Gallagher wrote the music, and the budget stayed at around five hundred thousand pounds. The prison scenes were shot in Kilmainham Jail in Dublin because the Scottish Prison Service refused to help. It was nominated for a BAFTA for best single play.
