What Carla's Song Is About
Carla's Song's screenwriter Paul Laverty had worked as a human rights lawyer in Central America before the film, spending three years in Nicaragua and directly witnessing the CIA backed Contra War. Tired of writing reports, Laverty wanted to make a film and wrote to dozens of directors; only Ken Loach responded, launching their long running partnership. Robert Carlyle starred in this right after Trainspotting; Oyanka Cabezas, who plays Nicaraguan refugee Carla, had never acted before. The film competed at the 1996 Venice Film Festival, where Loach won the Italian Senate Presidency Gold Medal. Who it's for: anyone curious about a Ken Loach film born from its screenwriter's own witnessed experience in Nicaragua. Who it's not for: viewers wanting an all professional cast, since the lead role went to a first time actress.
