What The White Sun of the Desert Is About
Sukhov has spent years fighting the civil war in Central Asia, is finally demobbed and heading home to his wife. A cavalry unit stops him on the road and hands him the job nobody else wants: guarding the harem that the guerrilla leader Abdullah abandoned in the desert. Abdullah is coming back, and Sukhov has nobody beside him but a raw conscript and a drunk customs officer. The Soviet answer to the Western became such an institution that Russian cosmonauts still watch it before a launch.
