A silent film from 1925 running over two and a half hours. Jim Apperson, rich and idle, enlists with enthusiasm when America enters the war, alongside two working-class friends, Slim and Bull. In France a closeness grows between him and a village girl, Mélisande, without a shared language. Then the front arrives and the film drops the enthusiasm for fear: the sequence of the company advancing through the wood still holds. Vidor neither glorifies the war nor rejects it outright. It was one of the most-watched films of its day and shaped the war cinema that followed.
