What The Captivating Star of Happiness Is About
In December 1825 a group of officers from the Russian army, most of them wealthy and of noble family, rose against a Tsar who had not honoured his promise of a constitution. The revolt was crushed quickly and the Decembrists were exiled one by one to Siberia. The real story begins after that: their wives face the choice of leaving their children, their fortunes and their social standing to follow their husbands. The ones who went knew they would lose everything. Vladimir Motyl’s long film is not about the revolt but about that decision.
