What Eugene, Little Eugene and Katyusha Is About
The front, 1944. Zhenya Kolyshkin, a fragile and bookish soldier from Arbat, goes out on New Year’s Eve to collect a parcel and walks into a German dugout by mistake. He gets away, but not out of punishment. What makes his life bearable is Zhenechka, a signals operator with a Katyusha battery. Vladimir Motyl directed; Bulat Okudzhava wrote the screenplay and the songs and Isaak Schwartz the music. Oleg Dal leads. Because it takes the war out of the language of heroism and tells it as lyric comedy, the film drew sharp criticism from official quarters and did not reach the screen easily; even so it has stayed a picture audiences love.
