The bin men are on strike in Glasgow, the streets are filled with bags, and after an accident in the canal a boy is carrying something he cannot tell anyone. In her first feature Lynne Ramsay does not narrate the event so much as the feeling of it: long silences, close faces, children playing in refuse. The poverty is real and the film is not consistently realist, since several passages are frankly dreamlike and are its most beautiful. The field and the new houses look like hope and it is not given easily.
