What Unpredictable Nature of the River Is About
The eighteenth century. Jean-François de la Plaine, a nobleman, is sentenced to exile and sent out as governor of a French colony in West Africa. What he finds there is the slave trade and the fact that he is part of the arrangement himself. Bernard Giraudeau directed the film and played the lead. The narrative does not use colonialism as background decoration; the man's recognition of his own position sits at the centre of it. Richard Bohringer is also in the cast. A hundred and eleven minutes, with the river working both as geography and as the shape of the story.
