Vanakkam Chennai

Kiruthiga Udhayanidhi's 2013 Tamil film follows Ajay and Anjali, placed in the same flat. Both have been swindled and have to stay together; getting used to one another turns romantic. The arrival of Anjali's fiancé upsets things. The narrative leaves the choice to the woman and does not set up a contest between the two men; the comic line runs through the supporting characters. Shiva leads and Santhanam carries the comic passages. The tone is light, the pace high and the city of Chennai sits inside the narrative. It is the director's first film. Who it's for: those who like Tamil romantic comedy. Who it's not for: viewers expecting an original structure; the film follows a familiar pattern and produces no surprises.
